Massive Amazon cloud outage has been resolved after disrupting internet use worldwide
- On Monday, Amazon Web Services disrupted global internet users by taking down dozens of major platforms, including social media and gaming services like Snapchat, Roblox, and Fortnite.
- AWS reported on its Health Dashboard that increased error rates appeared in the U.S.-East-1 Region at 12:11 a.m. PT and found a "potential root cause" at 2:01 a.m. PT linked to one of AWS's core database products.
- Independent trackers and users reported failures across Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, Ring and the McDonald's app, while Amazon said 64 internal AWS services were affected.
- By early morning, most services were restored as Amazon Web Services rolled out mitigations by 2:22 a.m. PT and fixed the issue by 3:35 a.m. PT, with operations normal by 6:30 a.m. Eastern time.
- Cybersecurity experts warned the outage underscores the internet's fragility since many rely on a handful of cloud providers; Patrick Burgess said outages typically resolve in hours.
