Until shortly before the registration deadline, Martin Pfister was not sure whether he would go into the race for a seat in the Federal Council. He made the decision after a long discussion with the best-known political scientist in Switzerland – whom he had known personally for a long time.

The outgoing Federal Councillor Viola Amherd symbolically handed over the DDPS keys to the new Federal Councillor Martin Pfister. He also received a "welcome gift" from each unit in the department.
