Philippines' Marcos to Discuss Trade and Security During US Visit as Tariffs Loom
PHILIPPINES, JUL 18 – The leaders will address a proposed 20% U.S. tariff on Philippine exports and discuss expanding U.S. investments to boost economic and defense cooperation, officials said.
- On July 22, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. meets Trump at the White House, during an official visit from July 20–22, to discuss strengthening bilateral trade and security cooperation.
- With the goal of strengthening the alliance, Raquel Solano said, while noting this is ASEAN's first invitation to meet Trump since he took office earlier this year.
- On trade tensions, Raquel Solano highlighted the proposed 20% tariff, and the two leaders will also discuss maritime issues.
- Despite his packed schedule, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will meet US officials on July 21 and will not hold a community meeting due to his busy schedule.
- Solano noted that next year marks the 80th diplomatic anniversary and 75th alliance, and Marcos plans to invite Trump to the 2026 East Asia Summit in Manila.
