AI Startup Manus Raises $500m After Meta Acquisition Blocked by China
Boyu Capital and IDG Capital led the round, with Tencent, HSG and ZhenFund joining as Manus resumes independent operations.
- On Thursday, Butterfly Effect announced that Manus raised more than $500 million in its first funding round since Meta abandoned its $2 billion acquisition of the AI-agent startup.
- Chinese regulators blocked Meta's planned acquisition last year, citing national security concerns and forcing the deal to be unwound after Meta had begun integrating Manus's team and technology.
- Boyu Capital and IDG Capital co-led the round, with existing investors Tencent, HSG, and ZhenFund also participating. Bloomberg reported the company's valuation reached $4 billion, doubling from the failed Meta deal.
- Dan Wang, China director at Eurasia Group, said the fundraising shows "the short-term fallout of the Meta case has been contained" and investors remain willing to back Manus independently.
- Manus has resumed independent operations in Singapore and unveiled Manus 2.0, an AI-agent tool built on its new in-house execution system called Cascade, positioning the startup for continued growth.
