Manitoba Minister to Take Part in Deaf Culture Training Following Hot Mic Comments
MANITOBA, CANADA, JUL 13 – Minister Nahanni Fontaine will undergo Deaf culture training and appoint a Deaf advisor while hiring ASL interpreters for government to improve accessibility, officials said.
- On June 26 in Winnipeg, Minister Nahanni Fontaine was caught on hot mic saying `why the F are you on the stage?` during a ceremony, with Aboriginal Peoples Television Network releasing the footage.
- While preparing to speak to reporters, the minister, Fontaine, told her staff she was thrown off and `'F--k, why did I have her on the stage?'`.
- On Sunday, in a video posted to Instagram, Fontaine apologized and signed "I'm sorry," after speaking with the Deaf community and proposing changes.
- She announced changes to the Accessibility for Manitobans Act would be made in the spring, and Premier Wab Kinew supported her efforts.
- To further bolster inclusion, Fontaine plans to appoint a Deaf or hard-of-hearing matriarch, and the Manitoba government promises new financial penalties to enforce accessibility rules.
