The man who set a Virginia city council member on fire gets 40 years in prison
Buck-Hayes pleaded guilty in April and received 40 years to serve after prosecutors said Vogler suffered permanent injuries and trauma.
On Thursday, Circuit Judge James Reynolds sentenced Shotsie Michael Buck-Hayes to 40 years in prison for the July 30, 2025, attack on Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler.
Buck-Hayes doused Vogler in gasoline at Showcase Magazine, claiming the attack stemmed from an alleged affair between the councilman and his wife.
Vogler suffered second and third-degree burns to 60 percent of his body and spent months in the ICU recovering, while his wife, Tiffany Blair Vogler, told the court their family's lives "were changed forever."
Buck-Hayes pleaded guilty in April to malicious wounding and attempted first-degree murder, receiving a life sentence with 35 years to serve plus five years for the attempted murder charge.
Reflecting on the past year, Vogler told 10 News he intends to spend his remaining life on the "highest mountain," grateful to have returned to his council duties.
