With His Dog by His Side, Man Rescues Himself After His ATV Rolled over in a Utah Mountain Range
UINTA MOUNTAINS, UTAH, JUL 31 – Jacob Schmitt survived a vehicle crash by crawling 11 hours with his unharmed dog after their side-by-side tipped on unstable terrain, raising $15,000 for recovery so far.
- On July 20, a hunting guide from Utah was scouting for mule deer in the Uinta Mountains when the off-road vehicle he was riding rolled down a cliff.
- The vehicle lost control and tumbled 15 to 20 times down a cliff, leaving Schmitt with a leg fracture, multiple ankle fractures, and several broken ribs.
- After splinting his leg using parts of the roll cage and duct tape, Schmitt crawled and dragged himself nearly four miles for over 11 hours with his dog Buddy's assistance.
- Schmitt reached his truck by daybreak, drove to a diner in Oakley where staff called 911, stayed four days in the hospital, and as of July 31, a GoFundMe raised over $15,000 for his recovery.
- Schmitt credits his dog Buddy for saving his life, is moving slowly during recovery, and plans to guide hunters again while preparing to revisit the crash site.
