Man and Woman Arrested over Waterford Arson Attack
A man in his 20s and a woman in their 30s were arrested on suspicion of facilitating a criminal organisation after four family members died.
On Thursday, investigating gardaí arrested a man in his 20s and a woman in her 30s in connection with an arson attack at 7 Birch Avenue, Waterford, that killed four family members on Tuesday, October 13.
John James English, the adult son of Philip English, said a drug debt reaching €20,000 incurred by someone else motivated the attack. The English family home had been targeted previously in a petrol bombing last month.
Two children rescued by emergency services remain in critical condition at Children's Health Ireland in Crumlin. A GoFundMe page supporting the family has raised over €50,000 for funeral expenses and ongoing care.
Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane praised emergency responders, with Cullinane saying their response to this "unimaginable tragedy" demonstrates "they are heroes."
Both suspects are held under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007 for up to seven days without charge. Investigating gardaí continue reviewing CCTV footage from Birch Avenue and appealing for dashcam footage from the area.
