Man admits arson at Labour MP's office building
- Joshua Oliver, a 28-year-old homeless man, pleaded guilty to arson for a fire at Sharon Hodgson's constituency office in Washington on early Thursday morning.
- Oliver admitted setting fire to a wheelie bin which spread to Vermont House, causing extensive damage including premises of a charity and NHS mental health service.
- Oliver pleaded guilty to three counts of criminal damage involving broken windows at Vermont House in the period shortly before the fire, as well as two further instances of window damage at his father's home in Sunderland during July.
- Defence lawyer Heather Bolton stated that Oliver admits to igniting the wheelie bin but did not mean for the flames to extend to the building.
- District Judge Kate Meek ordered Oliver to remain detained until his sentencing hearing, scheduled for October 14 at Newcastle Crown Court, where he will face all charges related to damage estimated between £250,000 and £500,000.
