NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Sports Arsenal-Themed Kurta for Eid Prayers in New York
The mayor joined a crowd estimated at nearly 2,000 families and said Eid al-Adha’s message of sacrifice should guide his leadership.
On Wednesday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined Bronx Muslims for Eid al-Adha prayers at Macombs Dam Park, wearing a kurta styled after an Arsenal jersey reflecting his well-documented love of the club.
Known as the Festival of Sacrifice, Eid al-Adha commemorates the story of Prophet Ibrahim; the holiday arrived shortly after the City Council passed legislation protecting New Yorkers from scams tied to Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages to Mecca.
Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson coordinated the event, which drew nearly 2,000 families, while Bakary Camara of the Islamic Culture Center of the Bronx said the mayor's presence carried special meaning for local Muslims.
During his remarks, Mamdani noted his East African roots, stating the continent "will always hold a special place" in his heart, and urged attendees to "hold firmly" together against division.
The celebration occurred amid rising anti-Muslim sentiment, as CAIR reported 8,683 civil rights complaints nationwide in 2025, the highest single-year total recorded since the organization began publishing reports in 1996.
