Mamdani Takes Office with Midnight Subway Oath and Public City Hall Ceremony
Zohran Mamdani, New York City's first Muslim mayor and youngest since 1892, was sworn in with a private midnight oath and a public ceremony attended by 4,000 guests.
- On Jan. 1, Zohran Mamdani will be sworn in twice—just after midnight at Old City Hall Station and again on the City Hall steps, with Letitia James administering the midnight oath.
- Mamdani, the democratic socialist who won the November 4 election, will be the first Muslim mayor of New York City and the first South Asian and African-born mayor, choosing Old City Hall Station for its working New Yorkers symbolism.
- Mamdani will use historic Qurans, placing his hand on two Qurans at the subway oath and a third at City Hall, including a pocket-sized Quran from the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture preserved by Arturo Schomburg.
- The public celebration begins at 1 p.m. on Jan. 1 with a block party along the Canyon of Heroes, 4,000 ticketed guests, and attendees advised to RSVP at transition2025.com/inauguration.
- The transition team says the inauguration celebrates a movement, with Mamdani framing it as a mandate to prioritize working New Yorkers despite critics and conservatives opposing the Quran use, including U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, whom CAIR labeled an anti-Muslim extremist.
