Malaysia’s coalition tensions deepen as Anwar floats snap poll
Anwar said the coalition is ready for an early vote if internal divisions deepen, as Barisan Nasional moves to contest Johor seats alone.
On Sunday, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim raised the prospect of a snap general election, warning he is prepared to dissolve parliament if cracks within his ruling coalition continue to widen.
Tensions surged Saturday after the Barisan Nasional bloc, led by the United Malays National Organisation , declared it would contest all 56 Johor seats independently, abandoning its federal ally Pakatan Harapan.
Rising fuel costs from the Iran war, currently totaling about $1.8 billion monthly, add significant budgetary pressure, while analysts warn political uncertainty could discourage foreign investors and weaken the ringgit.
Sultan Ibrahim held an audience with Anwar on Monday, a day after the premier floated the possibility of early polls, though a palace official described the session as a "routine meeting."
Although general elections are not required until early 2028, parties have shifted into campaign mode amid speculation that Anwar might seek a fresh mandate in the third quarter to consolidate power.
