Major manhunt underway after inmate escapes custody

Police deployed specialist units and urged the public to call Triple-0 if they see the 30-year-old, who was due to be deported.

  • On Wednesday, 30-year-old immigration detainee Michael Angok escaped from custody after being transported from Villawood Immigration Detention Centre to Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital, fleeing on foot shortly after 9.30am.
  • Angok was in detention awaiting deportation after serving a two-year sentence for his role in the 2014 gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in a Doonside park. He had been released from prison in 2017 before entering immigration custody.
  • A dense volume of NSW Police Force assets, including the Dog Squad and PolAir, established a search cordon around the area. Despite personal items being located on Gallipoli Road, authorities have not yet located Angok.
  • Described as 175cm to 180cm tall with a thin build, Angok was last seen wearing a black hooded jumper, grey tracksuit pants, and white 'croc' sandals. Police urge anyone who sees him not to approach but to call Triple-0 immediately.
  • Detective Superintendent Brett Van Akker said authorities are exhausting all opportunities to secure custody of the escapee. The Australian Border Force is working closely with state and federal police to locate him before he travels further.
