Mananchaya Sawangkaew earned her first Grand Slam main-draw win after Maja Chwalinska slipped on match point and could not move freely.
On Monday, French Open runner-up Maja Chwalinska exited Wimbledon in the opening round, losing to Thai qualifier Mananchaya Sawangkaew 2-6 7-5 6-2 after sustaining a right ankle injury while on match point.
Poised for a routine victory, the 24-year-old led 5-2 and 40-30 in the second set before slipping near the baseline and injuring her right ankle at the All England Club.
Struggling to move freely after the fall, Chwalinska told reporters, "It definitely didn't help me later, but it is what it is." She squandered a 2-0 lead in the decider.
The victory marked the first time a Thai player won a Wimbledon match since Luksika Kumkhum in 2018, as world number 164 Sawangkaew sealed her first Grand Slam main draw win.
Sawangkaew advances to face Alycia Parks in the next round, while Chwalinska reflected on the defeat, stating, "It's tennis, it's sport, so I'll lose many more like this.
