Maersk Resumes Suez Canal Route From Middle East to US
The move follows Red Sea attacks that pushed most carriers to reroute around Africa, and Maersk says trans-Suez transit times will improve.
On Thursday, Maersk announced it will resume Middle East-to-USA East Coast service through the Suez Canal, as the Danish shipping group takes steps toward restoring routes through the Red Sea.
Most shipping companies abandoned the Asia-Europe trade corridor after attacks by Yemen's Houthis forced vessels to take the much longer route around Africa's Cape of Good Hope.
"By making the structural change of returning to the trans-Suez route for the MECL service, we will offer significantly improved transit times," Maersk stated; westbound sailings will improve by seven days.
This operational shift occurs under the Gemini cooperation network with Germany's Hapag-Lloyd, announced on Monday as some carriers have recently begun considering a gradual return to the corridor.
During the Iran war, the Danish company has faced service disruptions in the Middle East, with some vessels previously unable to enter or leave the Gulf.
The Danish shipping group Maersk is once again allowing ships between the Middle East and the US East Coast to sail through the Suez Canal. With this, the container shipping company is taking a new step in the recovery of shipping routes through the Red Sea.
