ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar - Backers and foes of Madagascar’s cornered government staged rival rallies in the capital Antananarivo on Saturday following days of fatal youth-led protests that the president has termed a coup bid.
Since 25 September, the anger of young people has risen in response to the cuts in water and electricity. Regrouped in particular within the Gen Z group, they denounce the poverty that strikes them.
In a speech delivered on Friday, 3 October, while the country was experiencing a new day of protests, the head of state attributed the social movement started on 25 September to "mass manipulation".
