Mackenzie Shirilla’s Father Not Returning to Teaching Position Following Administrative Leave
The diocese said the art and digital media teacher was placed on leave after a Netflix documentary drew scrutiny over his comments and social media allegations.
The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland confirmed Wednesday that Steve Shirilla will not return to his teaching position at Mary Queen of Peace School in Cleveland.
Shirilla's departure follows his administrative leave last month after remarks he made in the Netflix documentary "The Crash," which detailed the fatal 2022 car wreck leading to his daughter Mackenzie Shirilla's murder conviction.
During the documentary, Steve faced scrutiny for comments on Mackenzie's marijuana use, stating he didn't "have a problem" with her "smoking dope" and suggesting it was a drug one "should take."
Steve stated he is "done talking about this," criticizing the school's handling of the situation while maintaining Mackenzie is innocent and continuing to appeal her 2023 convictions.
Mackenzie is serving a sentence of 15 years to life for the 2022 crash, in which she drove nearly 100 mph into a brick wall, killing her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and their friend, Davion Flanagan.
