McIlroy Surges up PGA Championship Leaderboard as Lowry Just Makes Cut
Shane Lowry’s 76 left him four over and projected to miss the cut as Scottie Scheffler stayed in contention at two under.
On Friday, Shane Lowry survived the midway cut at the 108th PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown, Pennsylvania, after a challenging second round. A timely birdie on the par-5 secured his weekend spot.
Severe course conditions and difficult pin placements hampered Lowry throughout the round. He described the greens as challenging, noting he felt like every pin was "on the bonnet of a car."
Tommy Fleetwood and Robert MacIntyre also failed to gain momentum at the venue after rounds of 73 and 75 respectively. World number one Scottie Scheffler battled breezy conditions while competing for the lead.
Lowry's round featured a double-bogey five at the 17th alongside five bogeys, but his birdie on the par-5 pitched to five feet proved decisive. He finished at four over for the tournament, securing advancement.
Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama matched the championship's best round with a 67, moving into a share of the clubhouse lead at three under in Pennsylvania. The tournament continues through the weekend.
