Long-Lost Rubens Painting Depicting Crucifixion Sells for $2.7M
The rediscovered 1613 Rubens painting sold for €2.3 million at Osenat auction after scientific authentication confirmed its unique depiction of Christ's crucifixion.
- On Sunday, the Osenat auction house sold Peter Paul Rubens's Christ on the Cross for €2.3 million at the Versailles/Fontainebleau sale.
- During a September 2024 inventory, auctioneer Jean-Pierre Osenat uncovered the panel painted in 1613 that vanished from public view for more than four centuries in a private Paris mansion.
- Experts including Nils Büttner and the Rubenianum authenticated the panel after X-ray imaging, pigment analysis, and microscopic examination revealed pigments and panel preparation typical of Rubens's workshop.
- Previously valued at about 10,000 euros, the panel's market standing soared to a multi-million euro auction price after temporary display at the Church of Saint Roch, with the unnamed new owner.
- Osenat said, 'I did everything I could to try and have it authenticated,' after months of debate by Rubenianum and European art experts.
