Police Brace as Thousands Gather for Pro-Iran Al Quds Demonstration

Police authorized static Quds Day and pro-Israel protests with strict rules on prohibited slogans amid a predicted large turnout and legal challenges to the march ban.

  • Around 12,000 pro-Tehran protesters are expected in London for the annual Al Quds Day protest, with police preparing for a challenging public order situation involving around 1,000 officers.
  • Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood approved a one-month ban on marching for the protest, allowing only static demonstrations, and marking the first such restriction since 2012.
  • Police plan to separate the Al Quds protesters and counter-demonstrators using the River Thames as a natural barrier, confining gatherings between Vauxhall Bridge and Lambeth Bridge from 1pm to 3pm, and will act decisively against chants supporting intifada.
  • The Al Quds Day event is organized by the Islamic Human Rights Commission, which is seen as supportive of the Iranian regime and has previously expressed support for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
