Fraser Canyon Wildfires Grow as Evacuation Orders Remain in Effect
Officials say lightning, heat and dry winds could drive more fire growth as crews protect nearby communities and keep evacuation orders in place.
- On Thursday, the BC Wildfire Service warned that the Brunswick Complex, including the 16,197-hectare Ainslie Creek and 3,026-hectare Brunswick Creek wildfires, faces increased danger over the next 48 hours.
- Seven evacuation orders and three evacuation alerts remain in effect for communities including Boston Bar and Canyon Alpine as the complex remains out of control.
- Incident commander Todd Flanagan said crews are building a contingency fire guard around Canyon Alpine and Boston Water to protect local values. This precautionary line serves as a backup if primary suppression efforts fail, according to the FVRD.
- Lane closures remain on Highway 1 near Boston Bar, with stopping prohibited between Boston Bar Station Road and the Jackass Mountain Summit. Drive BC reports the route reopened to one lane on the weekend.
- BCWS Fire information officer Julia Caranci said they won't know the impact on the Brunswick Complex until lightning strikes occur. These next two days will determine the likelihood of containment on the fires, which are suspected to be human caused.
