Leslie Jones Says It Was 'Frustrating' Being Typecast on 'SNL' as 'the Angry Black Woman'
Jones said writers kept pushing her toward the same stereotype, limiting the different characters she wanted to play on the sketch show.
Leslie Jones, 58, discussed her experience on "Saturday Night Live" during a recent interview on "The Sam Sanders Show," noting she felt frustrated by being repeatedly typecast as an "angry" character.
Writers consistently cast Jones as the "girl that was angry" who is "fighting somebody" or "in love with a white boy," limiting the range of performances she aimed to bring to the sketch show.
Though she told writers to "stop writing me like that," the comedian said "they never" listened because "they're like, 'This is successful.'" She also attempted to branch out by suggesting herself for different roles.
Bowen Yang, who left "SNL" in 2025, similarly noted in an interview with Rachel Sennott for "Variety" and "CNN" that he never felt "that central" to the show due to character limitations.
After leaving the series in 2019, Jones found success in projects like "Coming 2 America" and "Supermarket Sweep," acknowledging that the platform helped elevate her career despite the creative restrictions.
