Dale Brown, who has the most wins of any LSU basketball coach, dies at age 90
Brown won 448 games and took LSU to four Final Four appearances, leaving as one of the program’s winningest coaches.
Legendary LSU basketball coach Dale Brown died Friday at age 90, concluding a 25-season tenure that produced 448 victories and two NCAA Final Four appearances.
Arriving in Baton Rouge in 1972, Brown transformed a middling program into a national power, capturing four Southeastern Conference championships and leading the Tigers to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances.
Brown coached NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal and guard Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf; known as "Daddy Dale" by his players, he was celebrated for his compassion and motivational abilities.
His death came just two days after LSU announced Brown's selection as the 2027 recipient of the Los Angeles Athletic Club John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award, honoring his leadership and character.
Governor Jeff Landry credited Brown with putting LSU basketball on the map, while journalist Marc J. Spears remembered him as an "extraordinary human" whose legacy will endure.
