Witness in Prince Harry media lawsuit says key statement was forged
Private investigator Gavin Burrows claims his 2021 witness statement admitting phone-hacking was forged, challenging a key evidence piece in Prince Harry's privacy lawsuit.
- On Monday, private investigator Gavin Burrows told London's High Court that a 2021 witness statement admitting to phone-hacking was forged, claiming it was "prepared by others without my knowledge."
- The disputed 2021 statement, which claimed Burrows "targeted hundreds, possibly thousands of people" via illegal methods for Associated Newspapers, served as a primary basis for Prince Harry and six others' privacy lawsuit.
- During testy exchanges with barrister David Sherborne, Burrows insisted the claimants had "been seriously misled" and were "conned" by the forged document, denying he ever worked for the Daily Mail or Mail on Sunday between 2000 and 2005.
- Sherborne, granted permission to treat Burrows as a "hostile" witness, previously argued the forgery allegations were "wild and unsubstantiated," with closing submissions due later this month.
- Associated Newspapers Limited continues to deny all wrongdoing, while Burrows revealed he became "absolutely furious" in January 2023 upon discovering his name was linked to the litigation without his knowledge.
