TN Govt Formation: Left Support Takes TVK Closer to Majority, Vijay Meets Guv Again
CPI(M), CPI and VCK say only TVK can win a majority and form the government, rejecting DMK’s plan to back AIADMK.
- On Friday, the Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam moved closer to power as the Left pledged unconditional support for government formation. Vijay, who won 108 seats in the April Assembly, requires 118 legislators for a majority.
- Following reports that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam sought to extend support to the AIADMK, CPIM General Secretary Baby explained the Left rejected this maneuver, choosing to back TVK instead.
- Congress has pledged five MLAs, and Balakrishnan, former CPIM state secretary, confirmed that VCK and IUML have also submitted letters of support. These commitments bring the coalition to 116 MLAs, just short of the 118 majority.
- After meeting Vijay for the third time in three days, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is expected to formally invite him to form the government ahead of a Saturday swearing-in.
- To comply with Election Commission rules, Vijay must resign from one of the two constituencies he won—Perambur or Tiruchirappalli East—marking the start of his maiden government in Tamil Nadu.
