Italian Peacekeepers Replace Crucifix Desecrated in South Lebanon
Italian peacekeepers donated a new Jesus statue after the IDF soldier who destroyed the original received 30 days of military detention, officials said.
- On Thursday, Italian UNIFIL troops replaced a statue of Jesus destroyed by an Israeli soldier in a southern Lebanese village, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said.
- The IDF sentenced the soldier who destroyed the statue and the accomplice who photographed the act to 30 days in detention, removing both from combat duty.
- Commanded by Brigadier General Sagiv Dahan, the IDF's 162nd Division investigated the vandalism and determined, "The inquiry determined that the soldiers' conduct completely deviated from IDF orders and values."
- While residents rejected a replacement statue provided by the IDF, Tajani praised the Italian UNIFIL contribution, calling the vandalism "intolerable offences that violate religious freedom and the values on which civil coexistence is founded."
- UNIFIL operates in southern Lebanon to monitor the Blue Line ceasefire with Israel, maintaining a mandate to support the Lebanese Armed Forces amid ongoing regional security tensions.
