Leafs to waive David Kampf for purpose of contract termination

On Thursday, the Toronto Maple Leafs placed centre David Kampf on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract, signaling the end of his era with the club.
After earlier moves this season, Kampf had been sent to the AHL's Toronto Marlies, played four games, then stepped away and was suspended without pay on Nov. 2.
Kampf's career totals include 536 NHL games and 143 points, with three goals and three assists in 26 playoff games, while he played a penalty-killing role under Sheldon Keefe.
Getting Kampf's contract off the books will free salary-cap space for the cash-strapped Toronto Maple Leafs, and if he clears waivers on Friday, he can sign with any National Hockey League team.
Treliving's 2023 signing of Kampf left one season on a four-year, $9.6-million deal with $2.4 million AAV, while the Leafs cope without Auston Matthews and Scott Laughton on injured reserve Thursday.
