After a quiet start in May, the atmosphere over the central United States erupted with tornadoes, giant hail, and dangerous winds over the weekend, and the threat is set to peak this Monday.

The NOAA Storm Prediction Center has issued an unusual level 4 risk of 5 severe thunderstorms for parts of Kansas and southeastern Nebraska, with violent EF-3+ tornadoes as the main threat. While parts of the Central Plains and the Midwest are at the target of storms expected to start from Monday afternoon, a broader severe weather threat covers more than 80 million people in a 1,000-mile corridor from North Texas to West New York.
