Large, heavy cars give their drivers a sense of safety. In the event of accidents, the risk usually lies with the opponents of the accident. It does not help that the bonnets get higher and higher.

The growing popularity of larger cars such as SUVs is pushing up bonnets in Europe, increasing risks for pedestrians, especially children, a report by the European Federation for Transport and the Environment (T&E) concludes. A higher front end reduces drivers’ visibility of small children directly in front of the car.
