LaLiga Wins Court Orders Forcing VPNs to Block 16 Alleged Pirate Sites

Spanish court orders NordVPN and ProtonVPN to block 16 pirate sites, citing their role under the EU Digital Services Regulation to prevent illegal football match streaming.

  • A Spanish court granted precautionary measures ordering NordVPN and ProtonVPN to block 16 websites that facilitate piracy of football matches, targeting a dynamic list of IP addresses in Spain with no appeals and issued inaudita parte.
  • LaLiga and Telefónica argued VPNs fall under the EU Digital Services Regulation and facilitate illegal streams, with providers accused of distorting geographic location.
  • VPN providers pushed back, saying they were not notified of proceedings; ProtonVPN said it was unaware and NordVPN spokesperson Laura Tyrylyte said the company had not received judicial documents.
  • Rights-Holders framed the ruling as a precedent aligned with France rulings, but NordVPN and observers warned free VPN services limit enforcement while hosting providers remain key targets.
  • Legal commentators flagged due-process concerns as VPN providers warned orders without proper notification would be invalid, while Spanish courts must ensure parties can be heard.
