Government will release September jobs report next week, ending data drought from federal shutdown
The September jobs report ends a 43-day data blackout that hindered economic decisions and delayed over 30 federal economic indicators, economists said.
- Next Thursday, the U.S. Labor Department will release September hiring and unemployment numbers, a month and a half late as the data drought ends after the 43-day federal government shutdown, enabling cost-of-living adjustments for Social Security beneficiaries.
- During the 43-day federal government shutdown, data collection was interrupted and more than 30 reports were delayed, forcing the consumer price index nine days late on Oct. 24 and a seven-week gap in weekly jobless claims.
- Using business-survey data submitted electronically, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will estimate payroll changes for last month, but the BLS household survey wasn’t conducted during the shutdown.
- Investors and policymakers, kept in the dark by the blackout, are awaiting new data in the coming weeks that will carry huge weight at the Federal Reserve and influence the interest-rate reduction debate.
- It could take a few more weeks for data recovery as Jefferies economist Thomas Simons expects 65,000 jobs added in September, up from 22,000 in August, complicating the Fed's 2% inflation target.
