- Captain Reggie Williams, California Highway Patrol, said the crash began when a driver on eastbound I-8 lost control, struck another car and overturned, creating a disabled vehicle then hit by others.
- Returning from the San Diego Central Jail, Officer Craven stopped to help motorists; she joined the La Mesa Police Department Patrol Division in February 2024, and NBC7 reported five cars were involved with others hospitalized.
- All eastbound I-8 lanes were closed and traffic diverted to southbound I-15, with the California Highway Patrol saying closures could continue until noon while handling the Sigalert and investigation.
- The La Mesa Police Department thanked allied agencies and asked the community to keep Officer Craven, her family and the department in their thoughts and prayers, while authorities had not released the other driver's identity as of Tuesday morning.
