TikTok gets its Indonesian operating license back after giving government data from protests

TikTok provided data on live traffic and user activity during protests, leading Indonesia to lift its suspension after citing initial noncompliance with data requests.

  • On Oct 4, Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs ended TikTok's licence suspension after the platform supplied requested data that same day, Alexander Sabar said.
  • Because TikTok did not fully comply, the suspension followed its refusal to provide complete user data during protests between Aug. 25-30, with a Sept. 23 letter citing internal policy limits.
  • Data requests targeted TikTok Live traffic escalation and monetisation activity , the ministry said it needed the data to trace accounts tied to online gambling, Alexander Sabar said.
  • The move allows continued operations amid enforcement actions, preserving access for more than 100 million users in Indonesia while Indonesia's antitrust agency fined TikTok a US$900,000 fine on Monday.
  • The episode has raised free-speech concerns after TikTok briefly suspended its Live feature on Aug. 30 amid protests triggered by a delivery driver's death, under President Prabowo Subianto's administration.
