Dortmund Hold Off Sundowns to Close on CWC Knockouts
CINCINNATI, OHIO, USA, JUN 21 – Borussia Dortmund overcame an early deficit and a late comeback attempt by Mamelodi Sundowns to secure a 4-3 win, moving top of Group F with four points after two games.
Borussia Dortmund defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 4-3 on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, during a Club World Cup Group F match.
Mamelodi Sundowns took an early lead through Lucas Ribeiro Costa in the 11th minute but mistakes, including a goalkeeper error and an own goal, shifted momentum to Dortmund.
Dortmund responded with goals by Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy, and Jobe Bellingham, with Khuliso Mudau's own goal extending their advantage before a Sundowns comeback attempt.
Sundowns controlled 60% possession and took 16 shots against Dortmund's 8, with goals from Iqraam Rayners and substitute Lebo Mothiba in the 90th minute; attendance was 14,006.
The result moved Dortmund to the top of Group F with four points while Sundowns remained on three; Sundowns must beat Fluminense on June 25 to progress in the tournament.
