Kitchener Rangers Losing Head Coach to American Affiliate
Ahokas won a Memorial Cup with Kitchener and will replace Mark Letestu after the Colorado Eagles hired him, officials said.
On Friday, the Kitchener Rangers announced that head coach Jussi Ahokas is departing to lead the Colorado Eagles, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche.
During his three-year tenure with the Rangers, Ahokas led the team to an OHL Championship and Memorial Cup title this past season, earning OHL Coach of the Year honors in 2024-25.
Mark Letestu, who departed last month to join the Vegas Golden Knights as an assistant coach, is being replaced by Ahokas. Letestu led the Eagles to the Western Conference Final in his sole season.
Eagles General Manager Kevin McDonald praised Ahokas' "track record of winning games in a variety of leagues," while Kitchener Chief Operating Officer Joe Birch highlighted his "outstanding leadership" and impact.
Before joining Kitchener, Ahokas coached in Finland's SM-Liiga and led Finland to gold medals at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships, establishing himself as one of the sport's top young coaching prospects.
