'He's Got Cancer, We Just Connected' Says Patient After King Charles Visit

The royal patron met patients and staff and heard how the £2.4 million redevelopment will support thousands of people with cancer each year.

  • On Tuesday, King Charles III, Patron of Macmillan Cancer Support, visited York Hospital to tour the newly redeveloped Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Cancer Centre ahead of its opening, where he was cheered by patients and staff.
  • Patients and campaigners shaped the £2.4 million redevelopment's design, including modern treatment spaces and a therapeutic garden aimed at improving wellbeing for families undergoing cancer care and supporting thousands of patients annually.
  • Patient Lou Rhodes, 49, living with stage 4 secondary breast cancer and involved in designing the centre, said: "He's got cancer, I've got cancer, and straightaway he sort of looked in my eyes, so you've got that bond I suppose."
  • Charles planted a Macmillan rose in the centre's therapeutic garden with staff, and as he departed through the main reception, he was greeted with cheers from waiting patients and staff who stopped to speak with him.
  • Later that day, the King visited the Animal and Plant Health Agency at York Biotech Campus to examine a pioneering oral contraceptive programme designed to humanely control grey squirrel numbers and protect Britain's endangered red squirrels.
