'Kind of shocked': Malone residents react to Bare Hill Correctional Facility closure announcement
Bare Hill's nearly 300 staff will be reassigned and prisoners moved to nearby facilities after a statewide review determined closure will improve correctional system efficiency.
- On Tuesday, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision announced it will close Bare Hill Correctional Facility in Malone and consolidate part of the Collins Correctional Facility campus.
- Earlier this year, the state budget granted authority to close up to three prisons, prompting DOCCS' review of its 42 correctional facilities evaluating beds, infrastructure, programs, security, and health services.
- DOCCS said that the nearly 300 staff at Bare Hill will be offered positions at other facilities, and prisoners will be transferred to Franklin, Essex and Clinton counties.
- The union criticized the decision and said it strongly opposes the closure, with the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association warning it deepens staffing and safety crises.
- Long-Term closures since 2009—27 prisons shuttered—have displaced staff and their families, with staffing data showing correction officers and sergeants fell by 28% since January 2023, while the incarcerated population rose 7%.
