Kidnapped Nigerian retired general dies in captivity
The state said he died from diabetes and hypertension after nearly two weeks in captivity, while his wife remains missing.
On Saturday, the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu'azu Danmusa, confirmed that Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar was killed while in captivity by his abductors.
Armed bandits abducted Abubakar, his wife, and their driver along the Matazu axis of Katsina State on May 30 while traveling to a wedding, in a region heavily affected by violence.
The military paid tribute to the 61-year-old major general, describing his death as "tragic," while previously stating "In deference to ongoing rescue efforts by security agencies, the Armed Forces withheld public comment."
While authorities confirm the retired officer's death, the whereabouts and condition of his wife remain unknown, and Danmusa noted that security operatives have yet to recover his body.
No group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, though a military spokesman stated that "ongoing operations have since been further intensified to bring perpetrators to justice and to dismantle all terrorist networks.
