Kennebunk Teacher Resigns After Social Media Post on Assassination of Charlie Kirk
Richard Klatt resigned after a school district investigation into his social media post condemning Charlie Kirk, which sparked significant community and administrative response.
- On October 1, Richard Klatt, a Kennebunk High School health teacher, sent his resignation to Superintendent Martin Grimm amid a social-media controversy, which Grimm acknowledged on Oct. 2.
- Following the killing last month, the post under username `rickyklatt` was assumed to come from Klatt, prompting Regional School Unit 21 to investigate and notify the community on Sept. 11.
- In his post Klatt wrote he `would not feel badly` and concluded `Rest in hell, Charlie Kirk`; Klatt later apologized, saying it did not reflect Kennebunk High School community values and thanked the district.
- Superintendent Martin Grimm said the district was handling this matter with the seriousness it deserves and noted the review was complete on Sept. 25, while Scott Tombleson and Matthew Stratford declined to comment.
- Across Canada, universities placed staff on leave amid safety reviews; Ottawa police charged a man over threats, and the University of Alberta later reinstated a law professor.
