Keiko Fujimori’s party wins Senate presidency in Peru ahead of presidential inauguration

- Reinstating the bicameral system for the first time in more than three decades, Congress is defining its leadership two days before President-elect Fujimori's July 28, 2026 inauguration for the 2026-2031 term.
- Torres, a lawyer and politician, will preside over the Senate for one year and also serves as Peru's second vice president-elect, having been elected alongside first vice president Luis Galarreta.
- During his swearing-in ceremony, Torres stated the goal is to have a "more prudent" state and regain citizen trust amid Peru's governance crisis that has seen eight presidents in the last decade.
- The lower house, composed of 130 deputies, will elect its leadership in the coming hours as Congress officially begins its annual legislative session on Monday.
