Karmelo Anthony Files Appeal Against 35 Year Texas Track Meet Murder Sentence
The conviction followed emotional testimony from more than 20 prosecution witnesses as the case drew national attention.
- Convicted killer Karmelo Anthony filed a notice of appeal on Wednesday, following his 35-year sentence for the 2025 murder of Austin Metcalf. He was transferred to the Wallace Pack Unit near Houston that same morning.
- The murder conviction stems from an April 2025 incident at Kuykendall Stadium, where Anthony fatally stabbed 17-year-old Metcalf. His legal team argued the stabbing was self-defense after Metcalf pushed him during a dispute at the Frisco, Texas, track meet.
- Meghan Metcalf addressed Anthony directly during sentencing, stating he should "feel lucky" to receive 35 years. Anthony's parents, Kala Hayes and Andrew Anthony, later claimed the trial was a "setup" and vowed to continue fighting for their son.
- Contrasting claims emerged regarding race, with Minister Dominique Alexander alleging the verdict showed Black life is "not safe in Collin County." Legal teams and Jeff maintained that race was not a factor in the murder case.
- Currently, Anthony is housed in a secure area of the Texas prison system. Prosecutors previously dismissed defense claims of racial bias during jury selection, while the case drew national attention with testimony from more than 20 witnesses.
