Kangana Ranaut 'regrets misunderstanding’ over farmers’ protest tweet, gets bail in defamation case
Kangana Ranaut was granted bail by Bathinda court in a defamation case linked to a 2020-21 farmers' protest social media post, with next hearing on Nov 24.
- On Monday, Kangana Ranaut, BJP MP and actress, appeared in person at the Bathinda court complex around 2 pm and was granted bail by Judicial Magistrate First Class, Bathinda.
- The case stems from a 2021 comment in which Ranaut alleged some protest participants were paid during the 2020-21 farmers' protest, prompting a defamation complaint.
- Mahinder Kaur lodged the complaint on January 4, 2021, saying Ranaut wrongly identified her as Bilkis Bano and retweeted a meme calling her 'available for Rs 100'.
- The next hearing is scheduled for November 24, and Ranaut apologized, saying `Never in my dreams could I imagine this& Every 'mata', be she from Punjab or Himachal, is respectable to me`, as court security was increased and Mahinder Kaur's husband appeared in her place.
- After about 13 months of hearings, the Bathinda court issued a summons for Ranaut to appear in person, while the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Supreme Court of India rejected her relief pleas.
