Thursday's super special marked the start of the penultimate round of the World Rally Championship this year. It was won by two-time world champion Kalle Rovanperä, who will switch from rallying to formula racing after the season. Before that, he can win his third title, as Sebastien Ogier is only 33 points behind championship leader Elfyn Evans.
Finland's Kalle Rovanperä (Toyota) made the fastest start to the Rally Japan, the penultimate stage of this year's World Rally Championship season. In the opening day's only stage, the Finn narrowly beat Estonia's Otto Tänak (Hyundai) by just a tenth of a second and local driver Takamoto Katsuto (Toyota) by three tenths of a second.
With an eight-hour time difference, Thursday's only stage has already been driven in Japan's World Rally Championship and Oliver Solberg was fastest in the class.
