DOJ to subpoena Minnesota Democratic officials, including Gov. Walz, in immigration obstruction probe

The DOJ is investigating whether Minnesota officials obstructed federal immigration enforcement amid Operation Metro Surge, which has arrested over 3,000 unauthorized immigrants, officials say.

  • On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Justice served six grand jury subpoenas seeking records from Governor Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her, and Ramsey and Hennepin County officials.
  • Operation Metro Surge, a large DHS enforcement push, preceded the legal dispute after the Jan. 7 killing of Renee Good, 37, and Minnesota state government sued on Jan. 12 to halt the operation.
  • Homeland Security filings show the surge made more than 10,000 arrests and deployed over 2,000 agents, while court filings cite more than 3,000 arrests of people in the country illegally.
  • Frey's office was ordered to appear at the U.S. federal courthouse on Feb. 3, and officials called the probe an intimidation tactic, calling the timing 'highly irregular.'
  • DOJ attorneys argued in filings that Minnesota's suit would give locals a veto over federal enforcement, while Ilan Wurman said federal law is supreme and the president allocates enforcement resources.
