On Monday, tennis legends Serena Williams and Venus Williams lost their first doubles match together since 2022, falling to Mason native Peyton Stearns and Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 1-6, 10-8 at the Cincinnati Open.
The Williams sisters, owners of 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, reunited for their first non-Grand Slam event since the 2016 Italian Open, entering Cincinnati as a wild card.
Stearns and Kostyuk dominated the opening set 6-2, but the Williams sisters stormed back to win the second set 6-1, forcing a 10-point tiebreaker that ended on a double fault by Venus Williams.
With the victory, Stearns and Kostyuk advance to face Hanyu Guo and Kristina Mladenovic in the next round, while the Williams sisters expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete together again.
Stearns acknowledged the "sting" of playing against hometown crowd favorites, while Serena noted "I didnt come out here to win this tournament," emphasizing the joy of returning to doubles play.
