Judge suggests visa for college student deported to Honduras in violation of court order

A federal judge called the deportation a bureaucratic error and requested the government devise a plan to return the student within 14 days amid over 700 similar cases.

  • On Nov. 20, Any Lucia Lopez Belloza, a 19-year-old Babson College freshman, was detained at Boston Logan International Airport and deported to Honduras two days later, where she remains with her grandparents.
  • A Nov. 21 emergency order barred her removal for at least 72 hours, but government lawyers in court acknowledged they violated that order, arguing the court lacks jurisdiction.
  • Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Sauter apologized in court, saying `I want to sincerely apologize` after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportation officer admitted failing to flag the case properly.
  • U.S. District Judge Richard Stearns gave the administration 21 days to report on rectifying the mistake and urged the U.S. Department of State to consider issuing a student visa.
  • Lopez Belloza is now staying with grandparents in Honduras and studying remotely, saying the removal caused a 360 change and she felt numb during the flight home.
