Trial in killings of 3 foreign surfers in Mexico nears verdict
Prosecutors seek 150 years each for the three defendants as the judge weighs testimony from the victims’ families and a former partner who pleaded guilty.
A Mexican judge is expected to deliver a verdict Thursday in the high-profile murder trial of three men accused of killing Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend Carter Rhoad in 2024.
Authorities claim the victims were killed in Baja California during a suspected robbery attempt to steal their pickup truck, which was later found burned near their bodies in a remote beachside area.
Addressing the court, Martin Robinson described the murders as "hell," stating, "It's hard for a parent to lose a son, and we lost two sons." Prosecutors seek 150 years for each defendant.
If convicted, the trio will be sentenced Friday. In a separate trial last November, one defendant's girlfriend received a two-decade prison term after admitting she instigated the robbery.
While Baja California remains a violent state plagued by organized crime, attacks on tourists are less common. Other foreign visitors, including Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman in 2015, have previously been targeted in similar criminal acts.
