Christa Pike Is Walking with Help and Eating After Failed Execution Attempt, Her Attorneys Say
Her lawyers say she is eating again and may face lasting cognitive and physical effects after two lethal doses of pentobarbital failed to kill her.
On Thursday, lawyers for Christa Pike reported the 50-year-old Tennessee woman is walking with assistance one week after surviving a botched execution attempt that left her in critical condition.
Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital during the Sept. 30 execution attempt, remaining unconscious on a ventilator for days before regaining consciousness on Tuesday.
Her attorneys described Pike as mentally "foggy" with ongoing concentration and memory challenges, while her walking remains "limited" and requires assistance as she moves around her hospital room.
Pike's attorneys are pushing Republican Gov. Bill Lee to commute her death sentence to life in prison, citing the profound psychological trauma she endured from the failed procedure.
The failed execution on Sept. 30 has renewed scrutiny of state death penalty practices, even as Texas carried out the first U.S. execution since the Tennessee attempt on Wednesday.
