Massachusetts Man Arrested in Vermont After Mother Found Fatally Shot at Home
Authorities said the 22-year-old suspect was taken into custody after a search that followed the fatal shooting of his 49-year-old mother.
Vermont State Police took 22-year-old Ryan Hanafin into custody on Thursday afternoon, ending a manhunt after his mother, 49-year-old Andria Hanafin, was found dead of a gunshot wound in their Reading, Massachusetts home.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said the victim's husband, Matthew Hanafin, discovered his wife's body in their Center Avenue kitchen early Thursday morning; a 13-year-old son was also inside the residence at the time, unharmed.
Investigators identified Ryan as a person of interest after he fled in a 2010 Dodge Charger toward Tewksbury on Wednesday. Reading police suspended his license to carry a firearm that morning.
District Attorney Ryan characterized the incident as an "alleged" case of domestic violence, saying "It is shocking," and noted the tragedy reflects the presence of firearms during family disputes.
