Man accused in attempted murder-by-fire found dead, police say

Police say the death of Kalid Yimer ends a two-year attempted murder probe after a victim was doused in accelerant and lit on fire.

  • On Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026, the Surrey Police Service confirmed that Kalid Yimer, the primary suspect in a 2024 attempted murder investigation, was located deceased in a forested area in Fleetwood.
  • The attack occurred on August 2, 2024, when Pakistani-Canadian businessman Rahat Rao was doused in accelerant and set on fire in the 10200-block of City Parkway in Whalley. Police identified Yimer, 33, as the lone suspect.
  • Investigators recovered a stolen vehicle used in the assault shortly after the incident, and authorities approved one count of attempted murder in August 2025. The victim suffered serious burns and required hospitalization.
  • Police do not believe criminality was involved in Yimer's death, and the cause is not considered suspicious. Staff Sgt. Tara Nicholls confirmed the victim and family have been informed and request privacy.
  • With the suspect deceased, authorities have abated the attempted murder charge, officially concluding the investigation. Nicholls noted that while the motive remains unknown, police hope the community can rest assured.
